Community Resource Officer Ryan King spends his days building relationships. Officer King started his law enforcement career in 2008 as a police officer at the Ferrum College Police Department before going on to work for both state and local agencies in Franklin County and Roanoke.
He brings his experience and passion to his current role as community resource officer for the Rocky Mount Police Department promoting positive experiences between the Rocky Mount Police Department and the community it serves. Whether he’s handing out goodies to local school children or working with local business owners to improve their safety, his goal is to bring the local community together.
Through it all, his love of the area and the community shines through. We were fortunate enough to connect with Officer King and hear about what he thinks makes Franklin County so special.
What Part of Franklin County Do You Live In?
I live with my family in the Callaway area of Franklin County. It’s the perfect location for us because we love the country feel but it’s also so close to the Town of Rocky Mount.
What Is Your Favorite Thing About Living in Franklin County?
It’s the people. I love the small-town character but it has a lot to offer. Everyone knows each other and are very kind to one another. It’s a great place to live and it is definitely an area that is growing both economically and population-wise.
What Do You Do for Fun Outside Work?
Adventures. Myself and my wife, Tracey love to travel and explore other areas to find the hidden gems that our area provides. We also enjoy seeing what the rest of Virginia has to offer. There are a lot of places to visit and things to do for everyone of all ages.
Who Is the Coolest Person You Have Met at The Harvester?
I grew up in the 1980’s and it seemed every movie had Kevin Bacon in it. I am a fan. So, it was a surprise to me when I got to meet him one night working extra duty at the Harvester. It was pretty cool and I got an awesome picture with him! He and his brother are really humble people and you would not even know he is a famous celebrity.
What Is Your Go to Conversation Starter?
Well, a lot of times it starts when a citizen recognizes me and thanks me for my service. That always sparks a great conversation between not only for myself but for all law enforcement and first responders that are employed in this area. Rocky Mount and Franklin County love and support their first responders.
What Advice Do You Have for Meeting New People?
Be yourself and just know if you are anywhere in Rocky Mount or Franklin County whether it’s driving or just visiting its many attractions it has to offer, don’t be surprised if you get a hand wave or a conversation with a complete stranger. My favorite show is the Andy Griffith Show. I have always loved the feel of a small town like Mayberry and its citizens that live there. That is the way I describe Rocky Mount and Franklin County. I have witnessed it for myself—it is truly a unique place to live. Whether it’s going to a local restaurant, or taking in a show at the Harvester, everyone is friendly and outgoing and willing to help each other out.
What’s Your Favorite Place in Franklin County?
That is a difficult question to answer. I really like Main Street Rocky Mount. It has so much to offer for everyone like fresh vegetables, flowers, arts, crafts and baked goods. I enjoy going to the Farmers Market, the Harvester, and the restaurants that are all in walking distance to each other. Main street continues to grow and I am excited to see all the new businesses opening soon.
There is so much to do in the area. From Philpott Lake to Smith Mountain Lake, kayaking a river, visiting the local breweries or wineries or just going on a hike at one of the many parks. Rocky Mount and Franklin County have a lot to offer for all ages. It is truly an awesome place to live and work.
