You may know Kelsey Hairston by another name: the Cake Lady.
Kelsey has been baking cakes since middle school. By the time she was in high school, she owned a full-fledged baking business. Now, she owns and operates her Rocky Mount based Cakes by Kelsey, LLC where she fulfills custom online orders and supplies bakes to four different locations around southwest Virginia.
It’s always exciting to talk to a flourishing Franklin County business owner! We recently had the pleasure of talking with Kelsey and learning about why she thinks Franklin County shines.
What part of Franklin County do you live in?
I’ve lived in the Town of Rocky Mount for 10 years.
What’s your favorite part about living in Franklin County?
There’s lots of things I like about Franklin County, but I think some of my favorite things are the quiet and calm atmosphere, and the nice people!
What’s your favorite place in Franklin County?
Nature is so beautiful here! I enjoy the back country roads and breathtaking scenic views in the Sontag and Snow Creek communities.
What do you do for fun outside of work?
I like to keep it simple. I enjoy dinner and movies with my husband and hanging out with friends and family.
Where is your favorite place to hang out or eat out in Franklin County?
I love El Rio Mexican Grill! They have great people and great food.
What advice do you have for finding or meeting new people?
Branch out and be social–get involved in local groups and activities. I think it’s always fun to try something new in the city.
What’s your go-to conversation starter?
I like talking about interesting current events happening around the area. It’s an easy way to find something in common or learn about a new opportunity.
What professional groups/organizations are you involved in?
I am involved in my local church organization and am very active there.

Franklin County may be known for its interesting history, but there are some really great new things going on here! I am passionate about highlighting those positive things because I think people should know about and experience them. I’ve loved reading the #FranklinCountyShines series because it’s a great way to get to know about all the exciting things happening here.
